- Longer board = higher speed
- Wider board = more stability (also for passengers)
- Greater thickness = higher volume and carrying capacity. A thickness of 15 cm or 6” is optimal and therefore used in most quality SUP boards. It ensures the board is very stiff even at lower pressures, which means more stability and less bending, while giving the feeling of being on dry land. A passenger, if seated or on a seat, remains stably elevated above the water surface.
- On longer boards (14’), this difference becomes even more apparent, as thinner boards require a lot of reinforcement, which adds weight and may affect material homogeneity. This is a top priority at AMANZI.
- Indentations in the board are undesirable and unnecessary to create a water track. At AMANZI, this is solved with Front Tracker & V-MODUL™, our integrated homogeneous additions that cut into the water surface to create a track, while the rest of the board glides over the water. BOARD VOLUME – the key is the combination of length, width, and shape. Two boards with the same volume can have completely different characteristics!
**Why volume is not critical for inflatable SUP boards**
The volume of a SUP board (expressed in liters) is often misunderstood as the main indicator of performance. Most quality inflatable boards have a volume between 280 and 350 liters, providing buoyancy over 300 kg, which exceeds the needs of most users.
From a physics perspective, this means almost every inflatable SUP board already provides enough buoyancy for 1 to 2 adults. Therefore, it is not sensible to choose a board solely based on liters, as most models have a similar amount. The key difference lies in how that volume is distributed in the shape, which affects performance, stability, and feel on the water.
An inflatable SUP board with a narrower and longer shape can behave completely differently at the same volume compared to a wider, more stable model.
The design of AMANZI and AZULboards boards does not start with volume. We shape the board based on how it should perform on the water. We create a shape that will be most efficient for the intended use (recreation, touring, race), and volume is only a result of this design, never the goal itself.
The shape defines the character of the board, while volume merely provides a framework. Instead of relying on the amount of volume, it is crucial how that volume is distributed. By balancing width, length, and thickness, we create a board that offers the right mix of stability, stiffness, and maneuverability – whether it has 290 or 330 liters.
Too large SUP board: more drag, less agility, more effort while paddling, harder to transport
